Leaving before the task is complete

650 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: M9: Rest, Recovery, and Reflection
Location: Admiral's office
Timeline: Back Post

Sascha closed the terminal and drummed his fingers on the desk. The opportunity he had been offered was just too good to be passed up. The chance to develop new warp technology in space on a research vessel instead of in a lab on some ship yard.

However if he was going to make rendezvous he had to leave within 24 hours, and the repairs to the Achilles weren't yet complete. Yea the major work on the Achilles was done; hell the ship was stronger than it had been before. He looked over the remaining repair schedule and all that remain was a final application of ablative armor, installation of the a few systems upgrades and testing, calibration of new phaser strip, testing of the new aft torpedo launcher, completing of the internal renovations, and the overall resupply and rearming.

Sasha leaned back as he considered the list. There was nothing on it that any half competent engineer could handle. Well that settled it and he sent his acceptance to the offer he had been given. Now to deal with the Klingon Admiral that was in command.

Making his way to the Admiral's office on the station he activated the chime and waited for the doors to part.

Da'nal had just wrapped up issuing some order and awarding a few officers commands in his task force and was going to meet Aryen for lunch when his door chimed. "Enter"

Upon seeing the elusive Dr. Oakheart Da`nal sensed this wasn't a good sign. Typically the man was either personally overseeing the ships repair till all hours or off double checking everyone elses work. The fact that he was here was not a good sign and by his demeanor he could tell he had something to say.

"Admiral, you'll be pleased to know that all major repair are complete and all that remains are testing, the remaining areas to be renovated, and the ships overall resupply."

Da`nal was indeed pleased with the new, but could tell there was something else. "That is indeed good news Doctor, so why do you look as if your about to tell me something i don't want to hear."

Sascha took a breath and just let it out. "Sir, I must resign my position on the Achilles."

~So that was it~ Da`nal thought to himself. Rising from his desk he was sure his face showed the irritation he felt. "You want to resign...when my ship is still in pieces?!"

Sascha stood his ground as he fired back. "Your ship is NOT in pieces Admiral. In fact the Achilles warp pylon have twice the structural strength that when first constructed. The station engineers are more that capable of finishing what remains."

"I don't care! You can complete what you started then we can talk about you resigning."

"Admiral, with all due respect, I'm not a member of Starfleet and not one of your officers that you can bark orders to. I was just offered a huge research and development opportunity. Something that every engineer dreams of..."

Da`nal cut him off as he raised his hand. The Doctor was right and what was worse Da`nal knew it. He was a civilian and not subject to military rules and regulations. He knew he could make things difficult for the Doctor...spoil his opportunity even, but what good would that do. Stepping out from behind his desk he walked out into his office as he decided what he was going to do. Every option was a lose-lose and would start anything from open disobedience to civil rights violations. Problems he did not want or need.

Turning back the engineer. "You’re dismissed Doctor. Go chase your dream."

Sascha didn't say anything, he simply nodded and left.

After the doors had closed Da`nal he opened a channel to his XO. =^=We need a new Chief Engineer.=^=
