"The Federation will move to block any aggression. Are we to be known as the race that turned on those we once called allies?"
"ALLIES...HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN WHAT THOSE ROMULAN COWARDS HAV..."
"I HAVE FORGOTTEN NOTHING! Especially how they stood with us in a time of need. And now in their time of need we turn on them like, like Ferengi. Where is the HONOR in that?!"
There was the slightest lowering in his father’s shoulder but he knew there was nothing he could do. At least not without betraying his people. "I must go father, I have...an operation to plan and a ship to ready."
His father, the Head of the House of Varal nodded. This was not the first time father and son had argued but this was different. He knew his son's ship was heading into war and he had no wish their last words be spoken in anger. "Qapla...my son."
Da`nal stared at his father for a long moment. "Qapla father."
Closing the channel the monitor lowered itself down into the surface of his desk and he looked up to see the young Trill officer standing there.
Ash was content to leave the conversation she had dropped in on for another time, another place, even though her curiosity kicked within her. "Captain, I am Lieutenant Achava Vere, your new head of sciences, please feel free to call me 'Ash' if you would like." Ash said the greeting with a high sense of properness and respect for her superior, as would be the Klingon custom were they on a ship of the Captain's people.
Da`nal rose and acknowledged the show of respect. He motioned to the seat opposite him. "Have a seat Lieutenant....Ash."
"Of course Captain," Ash said as she slid gracefully into the chair. Civility and diplomacy aired around her in the way she presented herself, a far cry from the woman who had been lively on her way here.
"So tell me is Vere your family name or your joined name?'
Ash was slightly intrigued by the question. Few ever considered the change in name when a Trill and her symbiont were joined, it was meant to symbolize the coming of two beings into one, the sacred mission of symbiosis. "Linao was my birth name, Vere was added upon my joining." Ash said with continuing graciousness and difference.
Da`nal nodded as he absorbed the information. Most symbionts had had several hosts and this could be a vital resource that could be called upon. While Lance had retrieved the Lieutenant he had familiarized himself with the officer’s record, but he felt that records alone didn't tell the full story. "Tell me about yours Lieu..Ash, Science is a broad field, do you have a particular focus or specialty?"
"Astrobiology." Ash said with a smile. "Though I do have a pretty broad understanding of physics, sociology and anthropology. History is also a favorite of mine, the history of the Klingons is of particular interest, as is that of the Romulans and the Cardassians. Your people's history is one of passion that warped into violence, not the other way around, and I think that while people may see the Klingons as brutish, barbaric, chaotic..." Ash stopped herself from going any longer when she turned back to her captain to see a slight frown. "You're actually not that different from the high-strung humans we're all exposed to." All Trills have a superiority complex of varying intensity, Ash had expressed her's perhaps a little too openly in the last comment.
He had pursed his lips to one side slightly. She wasn't the first to describe his people that way, no doubt she won't be the last either. However to do so in front of ones Captain was either brave or absent-minded. "There is a great deal of difference between Human and Klingon history, but this isn't time to debate such things. This ship is preparing to infiltrate occupied territory and I want my science department ready to assist where ever necessary."
Ash nodded. "This is my first major assignment Captain..." A hint of vulnerability and timidity in her voice, though she quickly shook it off with a slight impulse from Vere. "... But I plan to do my best, as soon as I consult with my staff, efficiency reports and improvements will be on your desk." Ash said with a slight smile on her face in setting her own deadline.
"I would expect nothing less Lieutenant. As soon as we are underway there will be a mission briefing in the observation lounge."
"Understood Captain..." Ash said with a nod and a movement towards the door.
"Dismissed." Da`nal watched her leave and after the door left Lance entered from his office area.
"She stepped in it there didn't she?"
Looking up at his yeoman he grinned. "A bit, but I need not worry about it. My 'revenge' comes in knowing that she will have to deal with Goodshire. That should make her life interesting."
