Mission:
M-18 The Past is Future
Location: Secondary Sickbay
Timeline: During 'Saving a Slug'
The Phoenix's secondary sickbay was a revolving door of injuries, while the primary sickbay saw the major or critical cases. The EMH back up program and other staff were prioritizing the operations and engineering personnel as they were immediately needed back on the USS Granger. Stepping back from her latest patient Nina smiled, "J’ai fini. And who's my next contestant?"
"That would be me," Kai said from his spot on the floor. He was sitting cross-legged and as out of the way as he could manage in the busy Sickbay. The EMH was an interesting bit of programming and while the twins weren't nearly as complex, he had drawn his inspiration from the EMH on board his last ship.
Waving him up to the bio bed as a medical tricorder was already scanning him. Once on the bed the monitors automatically took their readings and was feeding that data to Nina's program. "And you would be?"
"Lieutenant Nokamura," Kai replied at once. One of those automated responses that had been programmed into his brain at the Academy. "I was in a jefferies tube when the Granger hit the wave. Felt a bit like one of those old-timey Pachinko balls."
"That would correspond with these scans. Ricocheting around a jefferies tube will give one a bruise or two. Luckily nothing fractured. Ya got a hard head there." Giving him a hypo to help with any discomfort and accelerate the healing process she stepped back tapping her commbadge. "EMH to Lieutenant Mitchell. I have your new Assistant Chief of Engineering her in my sickbay. Nothing serious and is being released for duty. Shall I have him beamed to your location to assist in repairs to the Granger?"
"My regards to the Lieutenant's durability. If he could swing by engineering and pick up a few more repair kits, we're also having a portable replicator being sent over he could please babysit. Everything should be going for a site to site transport, so he can tag along there." Jason remarked to the EMH, his voice a bit muffled and echoing like he was in a Jeffries tube. "Sound like a good start, Lieutenant?"
"Pick up repair kits and babysit the replicator once its beamed over," Kai repeated. "Got it, Chief." He turned toward the EMH. "Okay for me to get going?"
Nina nodded. "Absolutely. Just don't go bouncing and the jefferies tubes, I have enough injuries to still deal with."
"As long as the ship cooperates," Kai assured her, "it's certainly not on my 'to do' list and now, if you'll excuse me, I have kits to gather, babysitting to do." He exited Sickbay and, after taking a moment to orient himself, headed down to Engineering in search of repair kits.
En route, he went through the checklist for repair kits. Beneath the easy-going nature that most saw, lay a sharp mind that loved problem solving, any and all alien tech, and above all, computers of all kinds. What his mind did not love, nor excel at, was retaining unimportant pieces of information such as the contents of a standard repair kit. For that sort of thing, he relied on the PaDD he always had with him while on duty. He had the list brought up on the PaDD when he arrived in Engineering and headed at once to the storage area set aside for such things.
There were six kits on the shelf and yes, he took the time to check the contents of each one. Those that were missing minor parts, he restocked. It wasn't the most exciting job, true, but, to his mind, an incomplete kit could result in unnecessary delays and no engineer worth their training wanted that. For a short while, Kai busied himself with this task. He checked a kit, restocked where needed, and then closed it up. Once all six were ready to go, he went in search of the portable replicator and his ride back over to the Granger.
[Short While Later]
When the beam released him, Kai was standing back on the Granger again where an engineer was already taking possession of the portable replicator and another was grabbing for one of the kits. He passed it over and left the rest with the engineer handling the replicator, keeping one back for himself, when someone snagged his attention.
"You're not busy, good. What's your specialty?" The engineer in question, one of the ones from the Granger, was someone Kai recognized. "Oh, it's you. Even better. Come on," he said. "For once, there is something you can help with."
"Lead the way," Kai said. "You know me, brah, always happy to help."
Which was how Kai ended up working on a damaged sensor pallet. There wasn't a replacement available which meant that he would have to figure out what component was damaged. He pulled up the relevant specifications on his PaDD and laid out his tools.
