M-14 New Beginings

Voric was finally let on the ship. He was excited to be back on a modern warship once again. The Prometheus class was his dream to serve on. He had to wait to serve as Captain on one, but he was happy to be a senior officer on this one. He hung up his uniforms very neatly and orderly and had a bit of salad and then wondered when he would need to check in with the Captain. He was an impressive officer and Voric was looking forward to serving with him.
Voric heard the summons and made his way to the ready room. He had to pass the bridge and it was sight to behold and it was beautiful., He was looking forward to sitting at his station. He then rang the chime into the ready room.
Looking up as the chime sounded he set the PADD he was reading aside. "Come in." He stood to greet whoever was on the other side of the door.
Voric walked in as disciplined as he could muster and said, "Lieutenant Voric Miller, reporting in as ordered, Captain."
Gesturing to the chair opposite him, "Have a seat Lieutenant." Retaking his own seat, "I see from your record here that you used to be a helm officer? What made you want to change to security?"
Voric smiled as he took the seat he said, "This is going to sound like a silly reason, but helm control got old, pretty quick and I wanted a change. I found Security was the department to do that in. I maintain my pilot expertise, so I can be a backup pilot, plus I worked hard on those and didn't want to give them up."
The smile caught him of guard. "Wait a minute you're Vulcan and you just smiled...."
"Yes, I was born Vulcan, but during my childhood I was sent to live with my Human relatives in Texas and have human characteristics. I am half Vulcan and half Terran, but I act more like a Terran. I hope that won't be an issue for you, Captain."
"Oh not at all, just caught me off guard. After all when you me a person that looks Vulcan you expect them to act Vulcan. It will be good to have you as a back up on the helm...though I am a bit concerned that you were placed in a Chief's position without any practical experience is security."
Voric nodded and said, "I understand that, sir, and I brought up similar concerns, but Starfleet informed me due to my rank and experience in Starfleet that I should have a Chief position."
"Well don't take this the wrong way. Starfleet may have authorized you a senior posting just because you've held another senior position, but piloting is night and day compared to security. Administratively I foresee zero issues with you running the department; my concerns are with the practical implementation of security and tactical decisions. We won't be operating in a classroom."
Voric understood this and said, "Captain, you are right, but I am a fast learner and I did score top of my class, I have run various scenarios, and I am prepared for this job and I know I can do it." Voric for a moment was slightly offended, but then realized that the Captain was just doing his job.
Picking up on his offence Rico reassured him. "Don't take it the wrong way Lieutenant; I have no intention of micromanaging your department. But there is one change I will be making. Just something I picked up form my previous assignment. I plan on assigning the Marines to some security duties. For several reasons...first it is somewhat traditional for them, two it keeps them occupied rather than idle, and three it will take some pressure off of your staff. No final decisions have been made yet but once I talk with the XO we will set up a meeting with you the Marine CO, and ourselves. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you aren’t caught off guard."
"I understand, sir. Will the Marines report to me or to the Marine CO once he or she gets assigned to the ship? I don't want there to be any confusion in that regards." Voric responded with
"That will all be worked out later. Overall ship security will, of course, remain yours but like i said there are still several details to work out. I mentioned it mainly just as a preliminary heads up."
"I appreciate that, sir. Is there anything specific that you are looking for to be done?" Voric asked
Aside from the curve ball he had tossed about the Marines, Rico would have thought the answer to that question would have been obvious. "Get your department ready. I wouldn't be surprised if there was equipment still wrapped in plastic. The bulk of the crew will begin reporting tomorrow so you should have plenty of time to look things over, see if weapons lockers are equipped or not, etc. If you find that you need equipment or personnel not already stowed or assigned let the XO know and we can see if your request can be taken care of before we depart the station."
"Aye sir. I will check in with him next." Voric said
"Excellent. I won't keep you then." Standing he extended a hand, "Welcome to the Phoenix Mr. Miller."
